What Are Some Cheap Ways to Make My Apartment Look Nice?

If you are renting an apartment and you want to add some visual appeal, your choices are a bit limited since you do not own the residence. While you cannot paint the walls, change the carpeting, or change the actual structure of your apartment, you can certainly choose furniture, tapestries and more to impart your personality into your living space.

New (or New-to-You) Furniture

One of the best cheap ways to make your apartment look nice is to purchase new, gently used, or used furniture that you can re-finish or re-upholster. Take some time to compare your options, though. If you are going to buy new furniture, you can get outstanding rates on personal loans if you have good credit. If you do not have good credit, plenty of rent-to-own retailers carry furniture from popular brands and allow you to make small monthly payments until you have paid off the balance. You can also pick up cheap furniture from yard or estate sales, or even from thrift and consignment stores. You can re-finish or re-upholster these pieces, but you could also use sofa, love seat, and chair covers.

Curtains, Drapes, Throw Pillows, Rugs, and Other Tapestries

Once you have your furniture in place, it’s time to decide on tapestries. The style and color of curtains, pillows, and bedspreads can have an enormous impact on the aesthetics of your apartment. These are often available in discount stores or on clearance racks, so be sure to keep an eye out for them. Many thrift and consignment stores sell them, and if you buy new furniture, you may get throw pillows or a rug as part of a package deal. If you are crafty, you can even make your own with materials purchased in craft stores. This makes things incredibly affordable, and it allows you the ultimate level of customization.

Wall Hangings

Unless you have specific permission from the property owner, painting the walls is out of the question. However, you can certainly utilize wall hangings to personalize your apartment. Although paintings are nice, photographs (in color or black and white) are also outstanding options. Cloth wall hangings are also nice, especially on large walls. Hanging coat racks, wall sconces, and other decorative items are the perfect final addition, but make certain that you check with the property owner before putting holes in the walls for hooks, nails, or screws.

Arrangement and Color Scheme

Finally, once you have all of the pieces to complete your décor, you can use some arrangement and color placement skills to finish your look. Neutral furniture looks great with bright rugs, pillows, and drapes, and be sure to throw in a few decorations like vases or picture frames that also fit the scheme. Even your furniture arrangement creates visual appeal. For instance, if you have a large living area, you may opt to create a main seating area in front of the television and incorporate a reading area into a far corner. The possibilities are endless.

Although there are décor magazines and websites telling you what is or is not in style, the only thing that really matters is your personal opinion. With a bit of luck and some patience, you can find everything you need to decorate your apartment at affordable prices.
