It can be hard to find the perfect holiday gift for everyone on your list, especially if your budget is tight or shopping options are limited due to the pandemic. There are plenty of great DIY and low cost gift giving ideas out there, but sometimes, the loved ones on your shopping list don’t want or need more “stuff.” So, where do you begin?

This year more than ever, it’s important to give back if you’re able. A charitable donation is a meaningful gift that gives back to the community while showing the recipient that you care. Here are some ideas to inspire some ‘giftable’ philanthropic giving this holiday season.

Donate to the food bank

Food insecurity is an issue in many parts of the country, and local food banks keep thousands of at risk Canadians from going hungry each month. In March 2019 alone, over 1.1 million individuals were assisted by a food bank in Canada. And while children make up just 19% of Canada’s total population, they make up 34% of those relying on food banks. This holiday season, consider making a donation of non-perishable items to your local food bank in honour of someone on your shopping list. You can also make a monetary donation to your local food bank or to Food Banks Canada. A cash donation is easy to do online and often makes a bigger impact than food donations.

Give to a local holiday toy drive

What do you give the person who has everything? The gift of making a child’s Christmas extra special. Consider donating to a local holiday toy drive in honour of someone on your holiday list. Not only will they appreciate the kind gesture, you can both feel good knowing that a child in need got a brand new toy on Christmas Day. Easyfinancial has partnered with The Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada to support their 2020 holiday toy drive. If you’d like to join us by adding your donation, please visit this link! This initiative is live until December 15th, 2020. If you miss this opportunity, check with your local police or fire station to see if they’re collecting toys.

Choose a charity with a special connection

When choosing a nonprofit or community organization to donate to in honour of a loved one, consider their unique values and interests. If they are passionate about animal rights, consider donating to their local Humane Society. If they would appreciate a donation to a human rights campaign, a women’s shelter, a literacy project, a nature conservancy or a cancer research centre, make your donation there. You can even donate to their preferred church or other religious organization! Think about what matters to them and do a little research on reputable charities in that field. Charity Intelligence is a great resource for assessing how your donation will be spent and what the real life impact could be. They also put out an annual list of the top 100 rated charities in Canada — it may inspire your philanthropic choices!

Give the gift of kindness in 2020

This year has been hard, but every act of kindness makes it a little better. There are no bad philanthropic choices, but it’s great when the ones you make have special meaning. One of the reasons we partnered with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada on their holiday toy drive is that they’re an organization we’ve worked with for years. We believe in their mission and because the easyfinancial team does a lot of work with the Boys and Girls Clubs, we know that all funds raised go to good use.

Another great organization the easyfinancial team works with every year is Habitat for Humanity. We normally send a goeasy team abroad to build houses with the Habitat crew every year, and look forward to resuming this tradition after the pandemic.

Everyone has organizations near and dear to their heart, but if you can’t decide, consider one of these fantastic initiatives that our team supports. We’re proud to contribute to the excellent work they do in communities across Canada! Or, send a charitable donation gift card that allows the recipient to choose where the donation goes. This is a convenient, flexible option run by a highly rated donation platform. You can’t go wrong!
