✔Canadians are being forced to pause, refocus and prioritize
✔Incredible innovation is happening in Canada and worldwide
✔It’s a great time to work on that start-up or side hustle
Living through a global pandemic is tough; there’s no denying that. You don’t need to pretend otherwise or downplay the hard times we’re all going through. It’s okay to be realistic about the struggles you may be facing. That said, we still believe that every cloud has a silver lining, including COVID-19.
Though the challenges are very real, we can also take pleasure in the bright spots that have come from these dark times. If you’re in need of something to inspire gratitude, here are a few reminders that there is still plenty of good in the world.
COVID-19 is giving us time to focus on what matters most
Very few of us were prepared for how COVID-19 would impact our lives, from physical distancing and income loss to living under quarantine for weeks on end. It’s been a culture shock but as time goes on, we’re seeing some great things come out of this time.
We’re seeing news reports of damaged ecosystems and polluted bodies of water showing significant improvement. Families are banging pots and pans on their front steps in a show of support for our frontline workers. The ‘caremongering’ movement has brought out the best in many of us, and if all else fails, we now know how to successfully bake sourdough bread.
Canadians have been reminded what really matters - the health and safety of our loved ones, the value of human spirit and connection, and our ability to look after one another. We’ve seen wonderful acts of kindness and great support for our doctors, caregivers and essential workers. Plus, as individuals, we’ve been forced to refocus and prioritize. When some of the chaos and buzz of everyday life was put on hold, we were able to identify our true priorities. Whether it’s family, a career change, education, a personal project or something else, we hope you’ve been able to put time and effort into something that matters to you. And if you’re simply trying to stay calm and get through this? That’s okay, too - sometimes, self care means doing less, not more.

Incredible innovation is happening in Canada
One exciting benefit that’s come from this period in time is the boom we’re experiencing in technological and medical innovations. When challenges appeared in relation to COVID-19, many great minds rose to the occasion. As a result, we’re seeing advancements in remote medical care, testing methods, genetic mapping, vaccine development and more.
While this surge is happening around the globe, much of it is taking place in our own backyard. Canadian scientists, engineers and innovators are rising to the occasion. It’s something to be grateful for AND feel proud of!
Non-medical companies are also pivoting their businesses in response to the crisis by manufacturing masks, sanitizer and other much-needed supplies. It’s a great show of small business savvy as well as a testament to the resilience and generosity of Canadians. We will all benefit from this surge in innovation as it leads to new opportunities in our communities, both as patients in the healthcare system and workers in the economy. In many ways, the future is hopeful and exciting.
